UnZipping the Zip-Code in 97217 – North Portland

Thanks for watching the 97217 episode of UnZip The Zip-Code! Read on for more details about some of the places we visited in North Portland.

Portland International Raceway

We started out our adventure at Portland International Raceway where we met track manager, E.C. Mueller. E.C. has a passion for PIR and it shows! He even has his a podcast called, Cars Yeah, which features interviews with over 700 inspiring automotive enthusiasts. Click Here to give it a listen!

The PIR area is a community born from the ashes of a city. More than half a century ago, the Portland International Raceway site was something quite different than a park, it was a city by the name of Vanport. Home to nearly 40,000 people, Vanport was established as a housing area for Kaiser shipyard workers during World War II and at one time was the second largest city in Oregon and the largest housing project in the nation. Tragically, Vanport was built on low-lying farmlands and was washed away by a flood in 1948.

The remains of Vanport were acquired by the city of Portland in 1960, with not much left in tact, apart from the street system. The 60s was a time when there was growing interest in sports car and drag racing. The Portland Jaycees, a division of the United States Junior Chamber that provided leadership and training to young people, saw potential the potential of a race course in the abandoned area. In 1961, the first Rose Cup race was held at the new PIR as part of the Portland Rose Festival.

Fast forward to today, and PIR will be celebrating their 57th Rose Cup. The raceway is host to much more than just car racing. You’ll find events happening at PIR year-round like the There are many runs like the Girls on the Run 5K, American Heart Association Heart & Stroke Walk, motocross events, bicycle racing, obstacle racing, swap meets, and more! North Portland Eats

After leaving PIR and traveling down the road to North Killingsworth, we stopped by Eddie’s Flat Iron Pizza for some good ol’ Chicago-style pizza. Next we made our way to Up North Surf Club, a cool surf shop and beer garden with an irresistible selection of IPAs.

And finally, we clinked glasses with the owners of Garagiste Winery & Pub. Jan-Marc and Barbara are the owners and winemakers at the urban winery, Jan-Marc Wine Cellars and the pub/tasting room in North Portland, Garagiste. Seattle is the only American metropolis with more wineries in the city than in Portland. No one thinks twice about a brewery in the city but a winery…much less common! Check out this list for more local urban wineries. Plan an urban wine crawl this weekend!
