UnZip The Zip-Code: The Villages at Mt. Hood

This week on UnZip The Zip-Code, we’re heading east into the mountains to stop at the Villages at Mt. Hood and Government Camp in 97028. The greater Mt. Hood area and the Mt. Hood National Forest offers an abundance of activities and things to do. Whether you enjoy taking part in winter sports, hiking, camping, eating great food, or simply relaxing by a warm fireplace, there is truly something for everyone in this part of Oregon during any time of the year!

The Mt. Hood corridor is made up of small “villages”, better known as the Villages at Mt. Hood. These villages include Brightwood, Welches, Wemme, Zigzag, Rhododendron, and Government Camp. The communities were the first villages established under Clark County’s “Complete Communities” ordinance. This ordinance allows unincorporated communities to form quasi-governments which allow them to have more direct control of the areas they live in.

Here are just a few great places to consider staying or dining at during your next mountain getaway.

Zigzag Inn

The Zigzag Inn, on the west side of the mountain in the village of Zigzag, is a grand log cabin restaurant. It’s the perfect place to stop for a delicious slice of pizza after a long day on the slopes. This family friendly restaurant was built back in the 1920s using hand cut logs and has since become a favorite of locals and visitors alike.

Ratskeller

Another restaurant famous for it’s pizza, is the Ratskeller Alpine Bar and Pizzeria. It’s also just as famous for its selection of microbrews and house-infused drinks. The Ratskeller was voted the “Best Apres-Ski Bar” by The Oregonian – so you know it’s worth the trip!

Still Creek Inn

Still Creek Inn, in Rhododendron, offers a cozy lounge environment and an authentic German cuisine restaurant, featuring fresh local seafood and produce. Enjoy a view of Hunchback Mountain from any table as you chow down on a delicious omelet, homemade soup, or a Wildwood burger – all prepared by local culinary legend, Chef Brigette.

The Resort at the Mountain

The Resort at the Mountain, in the village of Welches, truly embodies the word “resort.” The Resort is a golf lovers dream and features a 27-hole golf course, 18-hole putting course, and pro shop. You can relax and unwind at the on-site spa, restaurants, hiking trails or in one of the 157 guest rooms, suites or villas. The Resort at the Mountain is the perfect place to escape the chaos of city life and get away for the weekend.

Huckleberry Inn

Centrally located in Government Camp, the Huckleberry Inn has been a favorite Mt. Hood landmark for the past 50 years. Pera Rogers and family are third-generation owners of the establishment, which offers delicious food and cozy accommodations that are perfect for a Mt. Hood getaway. Be sure to stop by next time your on the mountain and treat yourself to one of their huge pastries or to a slice of their famous Huckleberry pie. Yum!

Collins Lake Resort

Collins Lake Resort offers some of the most luxurious accommodations right in the heart of Government Camp. Whether you choose to stay for the weekend at the Grand Lodge, or are looking into purchasing a Chalet of your own, the Collins Lake Resort has a lot to offer any guest.

Apart from the amazing accommodations, the resort provides other amenities that no mountain-goer should live without. When you stay at Collins Lake Resort you’ll have access to the year-round heated pool and hot tub, sauna, fitness room, and club house. The resort also has a network of trails spanning 28 acres – great for snowshoeing during the winter months – and a “Porch-to-Powder” shuttle, which runs seven days a week and makes getting to the ski-lift a breeze.
