UnZip The Zip-Code: New & Old in the Pearl

Thanks for watching the 97209 episode of UnZip The Zip-Code! Read on for more details about some of the places we visited in the Pearl District.

The Pearl District, in Northwest Portland, is one of the city’s most desirable neighborhoods and it’s easy to understand why. This district is home to new high rises, some of the city’s best known chefs and restaurants, incredible art and galleries, and unique shops and businesses – the Pearl has it all. Many newcomers would never guess that the Pearl was transformed from neglected and abandoned warehouses into what it has become today. The Pearl has earned a worldwide reputation for being an inspirational urban renaissance.

One of the benefits Pearl residents enjoy most is the proximity of their neighborhood to just about anything one needs or wants. Living in the Pearl provides easy access to the waterfront, numerous parks, Old Town, Chinatown, Downtown, Powells City of Books, and much, much more.

Here’s a quick look at just a couple of spots we visited – one a time-honored Portland saloon and one an updated take on the classic tavern.

Dockside Saloon & Restaurant

We started our adventure at Dockside Saloon & Restaurant. This down-home restaurant and bar is located just off the waterfront on Front Avenue. This place has a very welcoming feel and reminded me of how Portland felt to me as a child. It’s a little quirky, very accommodating, and always friendly. Dockside opened under it’s current name in 1986, prior to that, it was known as What’s Up Doc? and Dot’s Sternwheeler. The building itself has always served as a restaurant in some capacity dating back to when it first opened in the 1920s. This classic Portland joint has a full breakfast menu, or you can choose one of their delicious items hot off the grill.

One of Dockside’s claims to fame came from finding some very famous garbage in their outside dumpster. According to the story, an employee found a bag of garbage belonging to disgraced Olympic figure skater, Tonya Harding. This garbage contained evidence that helped prove Tonya was involved in the attack on figure skater Nancy Kerrigan. Some of the most damaging paper evidence found was an envelope with information concerning Nancy’s practice schedule at her home rink. Yikes!

Pearl Tavern

There’s a new tavern in town and it’s giving neighboring steak houses a run for their money. Pearl Tavern was birthed from the partnership of former NFL Quarterback and University of Oregon alum, Joey Harrington, veteran chef and restauranteur, Kurt Huffman, and legendary Northwest bartender Ryan Magarian. These Portland natives have created a modern Pacific Northwest tavern with a focus on comfort food and delightfully whimsical cocktails.

The best part of this new venture? Three percent of the proceeds will go to benefit Joey’s non-profit Harrington Family Foundation, which provides secondary education scholarships and mentorship to Oregon students in need.
