This week on UnZip The Zip-Code, we’re visiting the town of Newberg in 97132. You’ll find the small town of Newberg just 25 miles southwest of Portland off of 99W. With a population of under 25,000, Newberg is a small, yet proud town full of history and possibility. During the past 50 years, Newberg has grown to become a dynamic and influential part of Yamhill County.
Fun Fact! Did you know that Newberg is the only city or town in the Northwest to have produced a president? Herbert Hoover lived in Newberg with his uncle, Dr. John Minthorn, and attended what was then the Friends Pacific Academy, now known as George Fox University. Hoover went on to become President of the United States from 1929-1933.
Downtown Newberg is experiencing a rebirth thanks in part to a $192 million grant in state transportation funds to construct a bypass around Newberg and Dundee. The bypass will help to alleviate the heavy traffic that passes through Downtown Newberg via 99W and allow the town to re-envison what their Downtown will look like. The Newberg Downtown Transformation Project hopes to make Downtown Newberg a true destination for visitors and locals alike by 2020.
Newberg has a lot to offer visitors and residents. Here’s just a preview of the places we visited during our trip to this thriving college town.
Coffee Cottage
The super cozy Coffee Cottage was the very first coffeehouse to open in Newberg in 1990 and has been Oregon’s longest running independent espresso bar. If their house-roasted coffee isn’t enough, everything that leaves the Coffee Cottage kitchen is lovingly handcrafted and made from scratch – pastries, desserts, sandwiches, salads, you name it.
The Coffee Cottage is a beacon of light to the community and an inviting place to gather with family and friends. They feature live music every Friday night and show local artists on the first Friday of every month. You can also pick up your new favorite novel – yes, the Coffee Cottage also doubles as a bookstore!
Alexana Winery
Newberg proudly proclaims itself the gateway city to the finest pinot noir grapes and wine in the world. We decided to stop at one of these amazing vineyards to see what all of the fuss was about and were truly impressed by Alexana Winery.
Alexana Winery is 80 acres of absolutely breathtaking views of the heart of Willamette Valley. The winery was opened in 2005 by Dr. Madaiah Revana and named after his daughter, Alexandra. Alexana features a three-story gravity flow winery, beautiful Gold LEED-certified building, and expansive 20-foot bar. Make this your next stop on a winery tour and experience some truly magnificent and local Pinot Noir.
Visiting Newberg makes for a fun spring Saturday out and I hope you’ll make a trip there yourself to experience all it has to offer. Grab a bite, catch some life music, or sip some espresso at the Coffee Cottage. And, don’t forget to catch the Newberg episode of UnZip The Zip-Code this Friday from 9-10am on KATU’s AM Northwest!
