UnZip The Zip-Code: Beaverton Downtown Historic District

This week on UnZip The Zip-Code, we’re visiting the Beaverton Downtown Historic District and the 97005 zip-code. Officially incorporated in 1843, the city of Beaverton is currently the sixth largest in the state of Oregon. 97005, which includes the downtown area, represents just a small chunk of this primarily residential city. Beaverton, one of the economic centers of Washington County, was named as one of “100 Best Places to Live” in the U.S. in 2010 by Money magazine.

The name “Beaverton” came from the original settlements’ relative location to a large body of water which was caused by beaver dams. The beaver has become a beloved mascot for the local high school, and even of some local businesses, like Beaverton Foods.

The Beaverton Downtown Historic District is comprised of mostly civic and commercial buildings built within the cities first decades (1868-1920). This 10 acre historic district is roughly located between SW Canyon Road and SW East, Washington, 2nd, and Watson Streets.

Beaverton Bakery

We stopped by a few local landmarks in the Beaverton Downtown Historic District. The first stop being a place every local should be familiar with – the Beaverton Bakery. Founded in 1925, Beaverton Bakery boasts over 90 years of “all scratch” baking. The bakery only uses the finest locally-sourced ingredients and all products are preservative-free. Stop by the bakery at their original location on the corner of Broadway and Hall Boulevard for a taste of their full line of baked goods. Be sure to try the Old Fashioned Cinnamon Bread, you won’t regret it!

Watson Hall & decarli

A few great local restaurants to try on your next night out are Watson Hall and decarli, respectively located in Downtown Beaverton on 1st Street and Watson Avenue. These sister restaurants are locally owned by the husband and wife team, Jana and Paul Decarli. Chef Paul creates delicious dishes from local, seasonal ingredients using Swiss/Italian-American influence. Watson Hall boasts six different “Hausmade” Bratwurst and the Beaverton-inspired “Beavertucky Bacon Burger”. Yum!
