This week we are exploring John’s Landing in 97239 of Southwest Portland. This little gem of a neighborhood has it all and is easy to access from busy downtown Portland.
Summit Mortgage Corporation is located in the historic Water Tower Building. Built in 1903, the former furniture manufacturing warehouse was transformed into an office and retail space in the early 1990s. We made the Water Tower Building our home in 1995 and have been here ever since. Come visit us on the third floor and find other innovative businesses, like Sports + Lifestyle Unlimited, a leading model and talent agency representing commercial models, actors and skilled sports and fitness talent. With locations in both Portland and Los Angeles, SLU represents approximately 1,400 men, women and children with a full range of print modeling and on-camera opportunities in markets across the United States.
A little further down the hall is Namaste Integrative Medicine. They offer a wide array of integrative medicine treatments from chiropractic care to Wellness Classes to Medically Supervised Massage. I speak from experience when I say their massages will take you to a whole new level. We all live busy, complicated lives and getting a massage at least once a month does wonders for the body and soul. Depending on your needs, massage therapists will use a combination of Swedish, Remedial Deep Tissue and Sports Massage. If you are looking to reduce stress, relieve pain or take care of chronic issues, Namaste Integrative Medicine should be high on your list of places to check out.
Outside of the Water Tower Building and down the road a few blocks, you will find one of my favorite hideaways, the JoLa Cafe. How do I describe this spot? Imagine the relaxed vibe of a Soho coffee shop in London and your best foodie friend’s pad in Portland. The caliber of coffee at JoLa Cafe leads me to wonder if they have their own barista training for pros to practice making the perfect cup. JoLa Cafe is open seven days a week and offers a delicious artisan brunch on the weekends, too.
We couldn’t visit John’s Landing without stopping by the Buffalo Gap. While technically located in 97219, it is still a hallmark of the John’s Landing neighborhood and one of it’s oldest establishments. The building is over 100 years old and has been used as a private residence, boarding house, brothel and finally a tavern. Their made-from-scratch menu and amazing waitstaff create a warm, homey atmosphere that is sure to make you a regular. Not only does Buffalo Gap have one of the oldest beer gardens in Portland, but they are also a live music venue and have classic arcade games and pool. They are known for putting on some of the best private parties and special events in town with catering for private meetings, lunches and dinners. Owner, Troy Itami, is a great example of the hard working entrepreneurial spirit that is synonymous with the Northwest. He worked at Buffalo Gap for several years before purchasing the restaurant and continuing to make it the success it is today. Go check it out – you just might see me there and don’t hesitate to come say hi!
There are even more great dining establishments in John’s Landing such as Cafe Du Berry, Porcelli’s Ristorante and Elephant’s Delicatessen. Visit the Corbett Fish House for a fully gluten-free menu and delicious basket of fish and chips. Check out Henry’s Wine Vault, a beautiful new wine storage facility and social club. Want to create your own masterful meal? Shop at Zupan’s Market for the freshest produce, flowers, baked goods and meats – perfect for the gourmet enthusiast.
